Online Auction Fraud

As the e-commerce industry continues to grow, so does internet fraud. Most people aren’t aware that the fastest growing segment of internet fraud isn’t identity theft but rather online auction fraud and it’s not just buyers who are being ripped off but sellers as well.

eBay sales may have grown 51% last year over the previous year, but general online complaints jumped by 66.6% over the previous year to some 207,000+ complaints in 2004. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), stated in its yearly report that 71.2% of all complaints received pertained to auctions.

Online fraud is a growing problem on the internet and the auction segment is far from immune. The IC3 reports that most complaints consist of late or no shipment of products, items that don’t match advertised condition and bogus payment or escrow services.

If you decide to offer “all items to be shipped within 24 hours”, make sure you keep your word, and go to great lengths to honestly represent and describe the item in your auctions. Your bidders will appreciate your honesty and it will eventually show up in your feedback.

As consumer fears increase, there are a number of common sense ways to help protect you from fraud, as well as enhance your reputation as a trustworthy seller and set you apart from the crowd.

Watch Out for Bad Checks, Money Orders and Cashiers Checks

Years ago I had a buyer who complained rather loudly when I didn’t ship an item as soon as I received the check in the mail. In hind site it was a good decision to hold the shipment since the check ended up being fraudulent. Bad checks, money orders, and cashiers checks are rampant in ecommerce today. The simplest way to offset the danger of bad paper is not to ship the auction item until the check, money order or cashier check clears your bank for payment.

Overpayments

Never accept any overpayments for any item. One of the more popular scams today is for a buyer to send a cashiers check for an amount that is higher than the agreed upon final price. They then claim it was in error and ask the seller to kindly return the overage when the item is shipped. Off goes the item, the overage amount in good money, and the defrauded seller finds out too late the cashiers check was fake.

Use an Escrow Service for High Priced Items

The primary purpose of escrow services is to protect buyers and sellers from fraud. Basically what they do is to accept the money from the buyer and hold it until the buyer receives and approves the merchandise. Please note that fake escrow services are increasing on the internet. Records, Records, Records

Keeps a copy of every transaction detail from the original auction listing to the last email. You will need that kind of proof to validate your claims if you should find you need to file a complaint.

Protect Yourself by Being Educated

At the very least you need to be knowledgeable about your legal obligations as a seller and familiar with the fraud protections and policies for the auction sites and payment processing services you use. eBay and Paypal have extensive sections on their websites dedicated to fraud policies and protections. You should take the time to read through these or similar information pages for the sites and services you use on a regular basis and be very familiar with the material. A few of the key recommendations from Paypal’s Protection for Sellers section include:

Ship only to the address listed on the Transaction Details page
Use a shipping service with tracking
Check out the buyer’s reputation
Accept payment from only one Paypal account per buyer
Limit credit card payments

Enhancing Your Safe Seller Image

Here are a few tips that will help improve your image as a safe seller for your bidders.

Identify Yourself – Make use of the about me pages to let your customers know who you are, how long you’ve been in business and how much their business means to you. Be honest.

Feedback Ratings – Auction buyers want to see 100% positive feedback.

Methods of Payment – Make it easy for your customers to buy but consider convenience, cost and security in choosing any payment method you offer.

Full Disclosure – Your auction listings should clearly state the condition of the item you’re auctioning, your shipping/insurance and return policies.

Bonding programs – A number of bonding programs are available on the internet. One of the more popular is BuySafe (www.buysafe.com). In a bonding program the seller agrees to certain obligations such as shipping on time, representing the item correctly, and standing behind the transaction. In return the seller can display a seal on their auctions showing bidders they are honest sellers and providing transaction insurance in some cases up to $25,000.

If You Become a Victim of Online Fraud

You need to know exactly what should be done in the event you are victimized. Make your plan now, before it happens. The most recommended steps to take if you are victimized are listed below but please keep in mind these are general recommendations and you should have you own plan based on your needs.

File a complaint with your auction site
File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission
File a complaint with the IC3
File a complaint with the National Fraud Information Center
Contact your local and state law enforcement agencies
Contact the local and state law enforcement agencies in the perpetrator’s home area
File a complaint with the shipping company you used
If the perpetrator is a business and a member of the Better Business Bureau you should also file a complaint there.

There are tons of different marketing tactics that are available for you to use and you get inundated with many “new” opportunities every week. How do you figure out if you should do a specific marketing activity or not?

Below are a few questions to ask yourself when confronted with a great, new, one-of-a-kind, stupendous, money-making, guaranteed marketing opportunity!

1) Will this marketing strategy actually reach your target market?

It goes without saying that any marketing you do needs to be aimed at your target market. That being said, we can still get wooed by a great talking sales rep! You want the marketing vehicle to be as specific as possible in targeting your target.

That’s why you need to really think hard about advertising in more broad-based mediums like magazines and newspapers. For example, you maybe don’t want to reach all financial planners but only those that specialize in legacy and inheritance issues.

Try to get into special supplements, inserts or sections that are particularly focused at your segment of the readership. This is key with these broad-based media vehicles because they also are usually quite expensive.

2) How frequently will your message be seen by prospects in your target group?

This is an important consideration when choosing any marketing activity because we’ve all heard it takes anywhere between 7 – 11 exposures to your message before people will react.

If you can only afford to run an ad in the newspaper, magazine or ezine once then it’s most likely not the best use of your money. Of course, you need to weigh the perceived credibility of the marketing vehicle and how much “bang you’ll get for your buck”. For example, one ad during Super Bowl may make sense if you’ve got the money – because of the number of people you’ll reach and the prestige of being on the advertisers during the Super Bowl is priceless.

So maybe you’ve got a great one-time opportunity to advertise in a big-name person’s workshop binder or new book they’re putting out. Just make sure that the value and exposure to your target group make the one-time price worth it.

Try to use marketing tactics that allow you to keep in contact with your prospects and clients frequently. That’s why email marketing and having a newsletter are such cost-efficient and effective marketing strategies.

3) Is this marketing tactic something you can do consistently?

One of the worst things people do with their marketing is to start something, do it for a little while and then abandon it when something else grabs their eye. To reap the most benefits (read: profits and great relationships) you need to choose marketing tactics that you can do consistently and in that way build the relationship with your prospects and customers.

When evaluating a new strategy figure out if you’ve got the time, money and sometimes most importantly – the interest in doing it on a consistent basis. For example, don’t start a weekly ezine unless you can dedicate an hour each week to writing it. You don’t want to send a message to your prospective clients that you can’t be reliable and “stick” with something.

Next time you’re told about THE newest, best marketing activity that you MUST try, step back and take a few minutes to ask yourself these 3 questions. It will make marketing easier and less stressful for you and also for your prospects!

How to Set (and Get) the Right Prices

Which product feature of yours is every buyer keen to know about? Which sales tool closes prospects instantly? Your price. Yet, despite the far-reaching consequences of a company’s pricing, I’m surprised at how little time small business owners spend on it. Here are a few ways to bring pricing to the forefront of your marketing plan.

Price is a promise

Let’s say you’re shopping for cereal and come across two varieties. One is a well-known brand in a resealable 20 oz. package, which comes with a toy and sells for $4.99. The other is a store brand, that’s packaged in a non-descript plastic bag and sells for $2.99. Which do you buy?

If price was your only factor, you’d buy the $2.99 brand. But there are other factors. In this example, the $4.99 box promises you the reputation of a well-known brand, a toy to entertain your kids and the convenience of resealable packaging. Remember that a price guarantees all the promises wrapped up in your product or service.

Determine your promises

Before you ever touch a calculator, first take stock of all the value factors that are bundled into your price. If your company sells a product, these might include:

· the performance of your finished good
· your distribution capabilities or
· your service and installation services.

If yours is a service, value factors might include:

· the bottom-line impact of your deliverable
· your company’s ability to meet tight timelines.
· your experience level.

Pricing financially

After taking stock of all your value factors, grab a calculator. First, add up all your direct costs (those incurred as a result of delivering your service) which include labor and raw materials. Then, add up all your indirect costs (all other costs that aren’t direct) like rent, insurance and utilities.

Now, identify the profit your company needs to attain in order to fuel new investment and reward your employees. Finally, forecast what your annual unit volumes will be. Now, divide the total of your costs and profit by annual units sold, and you end up with a unit price. Sure, this is a simplified example, but the process is sound. This kind of analysis will help ascertain where your prices should be from a financial perspective.

Pricing competitively

It’s important not to stop here. Instead, gather competitive pricing information from any of these sources:

· Intermediaries (distributors, brokers)
· Previous customers
· Prospects
· Ex-employees of your competitors
· Trade associations

After digging around enough, you’ll be able to generate a range of prices that your competitors fall into. Together with your financial prices, you’ll now have two reference points.

Pricing by position

The last step is to and ask this question “How do we want to be perceived in our market?” In my book The Marketing Toolkit for Growing Businesses , I identify 13 possible price strategies you could choose from, but to make this easy, consider just three:

· Premium Price; the most expensive 1/3rd of your market
· Middle Market Prices; the middle 1/3rd
· Budget Price; the least expensive 1/3rd.

Based on the value factors you’ve identified and your chief competitors, which of these 3 price level best matches your product? The lesson in this exercise is that price positions your product.

The worst pricing decision you can make

“Because we’re slow right now, we’ll lower our prices. Then as business rebounds, we’ll raise them.” This is a bad marketing decision because lowering your prices immediately positions your product differently to buyers. Plus very few companies make attendant cost reductions, so margins erode. And when you try to raise prices again, customers who bought at the lower prices will expect to get more value factors for the additional price. A better strategy is to maintain your current prices while seeking cost reductions to maintain your margins.

Another bad pricing decision

“If I drop my price to $15, then will you buy?” Here, you signal to a buyer that your list prices are not final. Sensing this, buyers will negotiate harder and the resulting price reductions will cut into your margins. Instead, think about coupling price discounts to the buyer with equivalent reductions in your offering. For example, you could say “OK I can lower my price to $15, but I’ll have to reduce our warranty period from five years to two.”

Sure, pricing is a financial decision. But it has wide ranging impact on your positioning, your selling efforts and your product offering. Remember the words of Thomas Paine “What we obtain too cheap we esteem too little; it is dearness only that gives everything its value.”

When this happen, the merchant usually suffers complaints and they definitely lose potential consumer.

To the Publisher/Affiliates. Sometimes unscrupulous and dishonest merchants just close down programs without informing the affiliates. And worse, they leave without paying commissions. There are also some merchants who attract new affiliates by promising high commissions then after a week or two, they dramatically drop those commission rates. Aside from that, when hijackers interfere, affiliates typically don’t get just commission, it goes to the hijacker instead.
